“Skirted” toilet pros and cons?

housenut1 | Posted in Construction Techniques on February 20, 2009 06:40am

Finally ready to do my bathroom.  Retailer said skirted toilets provide a cleaner look and prevent items from getting lost behind them.  Any ideas or is it just personal preference.  She did say to have supply line at least 8 inches off center for this type.

I'm highly partial to Toto toilets, and I don't know if they make any skirted models. The Aquia dual-flush model has a design that hides the trapway that you usually see from the side. Whatever toilet you choose, be sure to read up on it to make sure it works well. Some are a LOT better than others.

Thanks, I'll do that.  Toto has several skirted models by the way.  If it does not flush well my wife will disown me so I better be careful.  I may try a retailer who has a model set up and give it a flush.  In FHB their was a story about a guy whose wife brought in four or five hot dogs for a test.

Totos flush great. I'm sure some other models are decent too, but I'll never get anything else except Toto.

Here here maybe a heated seat when I hit the lotto.

      Thanks

skirted toilets are good looking and easier to keep clean because they don't have the relief lines of the trap exposed.

About the only toilets I install are Totos and the Aquia is a good one.  It is skirted by the way.  I've got one in my first floor bath.

The supply does need to be 8" off center on the skirted Totos but I am not sure about the other brands.

Thanks for the reassurance.  We are going to buy a Toto too but a more traditional look for our old house.

The only thing to be concerned about with Toto is available product and warranty parts.

They were having a big problem with stocking up the warehouses here in the US but they have gotten better.

Still, with some of their models it may take 2 or 3 months to get.

Typically the person who cleans the bathroom will appreciate the clean lines of the skirted toilet, because they are easier to clean.

The exposed irregular surfaces, and the spot on the floor that is almost impossible to get a mop to are gone.

Are any of these toilet self-cleaning? I am putting self-cleaning toilets from Panasonic in the new house and I wonder how well it works.

I would just suggest that you double check the rough-in - fully skirted toilets can be a little less forgiving.

We have 2 Totos, a Drake and an Ultimate. I'd recommend the former but would go w/ the Ultramax (same body, upgraded flush mechanism) for the latter. I don't know if it's b/c it's shorter or what, but I've managed to clog it up many times.

But my point in writing was to tell you to use the performance test results from CA as a guide in making your selection. There's a link on the page to just the tables of results:

We have the Toto Vespin, and it looks great, flushes great, and it's easy to clean, except inside. We opted for the Sani-Gloss finish and would never do it again. It doesn't clean well, leaving stain lines, and we aren't supposed to use any harsh products on it. I'll settle for plain vitreous china instead for the future. Your installer may not like the Vespin because a drain tube is installed to the flange first, and then the toilet is seated over it. Final installation requires attaching the tube to the toilet via a hatch in the toilet's side. A royal pain in a tight location. But if you're paying for it, why should you care? Oh, buy a few Korky valves, as these seem not to last a long time, though they work well when healthy. Also cheap and easy to replace.

The Acquia install is similar--there's a piece that attaches to the flange, and then the toilet attaches to that. My plumber had a leak on one, had to reset it.

Forget the skirting, i've always wanted a clear lucite toilet.

Clear lucite? Does that mean you get to flush and then see it all go through the toilet? Doesn't that sound interesting? "Look honey. I warned you not to flush that. See where it's stuck at that turn?" Maybe install mirrors on each side so that guests can see what they're really doing. Also a video camera to capture the drugs going down when the narcs knock on the door. Really interesting thoughts.

Yeah, I know it sounds weird but it would be unique.
