I have a slate mantel that dates from the late 1890s. It has paint dropings (probably oil and latex) as well as many years of accumuated grime. Any suggestions as to how to clean this? Thanks

I would chip the paint off with a dental pick, wash off as much of the grime as possible with hot soapy water, and leave the rest.
Google "dental picks" for numerous sources.
Ammonia for latex, paint stripper for oil.
