I have a client that has two pallets of slate roof tiles that were given to them. We are desinging a patio for their backyard, and they have asked me if those slate tiles can be used as the patio surface. Of course I have some concerns about this, but I thought I would check to see if anyone has any expereince with this. I would presume to lay them on a concrete pad using thinset. among other things, I am concerned about the durability of slate with foot traffic, but I don’t want to dismiss the idea without garnering other opinions. thanks in advance.

That's a really bad idea. I'll e-mail you my address, go ahead and send both pallets to me, prepaid of course.
Do it right, or do it twice.
I agree that is really a bad idea, but since you are in a bind, send them to me and I'll send via return post two pallets of granite pavers.. (which is the proper item for under foot)
Thanks for your thoughts. But WHY do you think its a bad idea?
Paul
Sarcasm. You have a pile of free slate and I don't . With the proper base, it should work ok.Do it right, or do it twice.
you have what I want and I want to be tricky and con you out of them.. should work just fine.. (please don't tell me they are red slates..)
Yes Frenchy, they are red slates, so you really don't have any use for them. Tell you what...since you have some granite pavers that you don't want, and he has slate pavers that he can't use, why don't you send him the granite and he can send me the slate and then everyone will be happy! Do it right, or do it twice.
Caution,
I've been known to kill for red slate
Since the going price for a hundred square feet of red slate is $1,000 dollars.
and my house would look great in red slate..
Paul....you need to be filled in a bit...Frenchy's building himself a beautiful timberframe cathedral (well, he calls it a house...) and has been looking for slate for his roof...Lots and lots of it (55 square I think)...
Check out a thread including "seeing the Wacko" for pics....
Guys: Thanks for your thoughts. It is hard to detect sarcasm in emails!! They are fairly mundane gray slate tiles. I have only seen samples at this point, so they may not even usable. If we end up not using them, maybe we can work something out!!
Just put down a suitable mortar bed, and they should work ok.Do it right, or do it twice.
