I wish to replace the existing shingle roof on my home in NW Bergen County, New Jersey with a slate roof and would appreciate hearing from or about roofers in the area who can perform this type of work. The roof is fairly complex, roughly 4000 square feet with lots of nooks & crannies – several dormers, one chimney, many valleys. Am concerned primarily with quality of workmanship. References required; would have to see examples of work done on other homes.

I know your post says that you're "concerned primarily with quality of workmanship", but being from NJ myself, I just wanted to make sure you aren't about to suffer from sticker shock. 4,000 SF of slate roofing will run you somewhere between $35-45,000, depending on the quality of material you select- especially with the nooks and crannies.
Just thought I'd give you a quick heads up (or maybe the cost doesn't matter to you).
