Do any of you brilliant minds have any suggestions for hardware or methods to build a sliding panel gate for your basic 6′ tall wood fence–8′ long panels between 4×4 posts?
I have a client with alley access to the back of the lot. I am to rebuild fence and gates back there. Has a shed near the fence. Wants a std pedestrian gate 3′ wide but then also if one panel, say 7′ could slide back lateraly along it’s neighbor this would be great.
I see sliding gates–mostly chain link–around quite a bit, with the wheel ‘foot’ on the extended end. I thought there would be commonly available hardware to build your own setup, but a few calls around locally yielded nothing and a lot of ‘that doesn’t work…’ comments…
Anyone have a suggestion for hardware, or how to rig it up to hang on channel/rollers on the two posts down the line?
Thank you

Here is links for catalever and rolling sliding gates.
Don't know why you could not use the wheels or rollers and brackets and mount a pipe on the back of a woodend fence.

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
With a gate cantilevered out seven feet you're going to need a steel frame for both the gate and the fixed fence it's attached to. Plus enough concrete on the inboard post (7-8 feet from the opening) to counterbalance the gate.
i've been thinking about one of these too. why not put a beam across two posts and hang a barn door type rig from it? something like an I beam with rollers and the gate/door hanging from the rollers.
my fence is 8 feet tall, so head room may be more of an issue for you.
actually... that might be the best solution.. Barn door hardware is easily had but overhead only so maybe I should find an attractive way to make a 'arbor' out of the 3 high posts cross member and gate required to slide it overhead?
The best thing I can come up with would be garage door track, two on the face of the panel that nest in two on the back side of the posts.
A 7'x6' panel isn't that heavy that the client couldn't pick up one end to push it back until the tracks carried the weight.
I would set short sections of tracks on the posts on the "Latch" side and let the panel track extend a bit past it's edge, so both sides of the panel were supported, then fab up a set of anti-lift blocks to set in the post tracks. Add a pair of matched holes for a lock and...

Whatever you do, don't add a wheel to the far end of the gate (or any other part thereof)... that is just cheesy, cheap, ugly and cumbersome in bad weather.
To have a 7' slider, you'll likely need to build a panel that totals 14' or so. Half would have pickets and the other half would be just frame to ride in rollers behind the stationary panel.
I don't have time to assist in the search now but I am sure that you can acquire the rollers/pullies easily enough online.
You will need 4 rollers and a total of 14' next to the opening for the gate to slide over to provide clearance in the opening.
