I’m looking for a small sized water softener (need the space).
I see that Lowe’s sells something called the cityboss?
Any suggestions?

Kinetico has a very small but pricey one.
I built a countertop over mine.

I installed one of the smaller units made by GE. It has about the same footprint as the Cityboss. Its about 18" diameter and about 4'tall. If I remember correctly it has a larger capacity than the Cityboss.
I saved some room by installing it outside and will, just as soon as the mood overtakes me, install a small lean-to enclosure to keep it out of the weather. Presently I have a functional, and quite decorative, tarp over it to keep the electronics dry. Had a bit of trouble when a small tree frog got into the electronics but I was able to clear the short by removing the critter and reinsulating with nail polish to prevent a recurrence.
No permanent damage to the softener but the frog didn't make it despite the CPR and rush to the hospital. It was a real pain finding the next of kin, he carried a wallet but I had to use a microscope to read the address, and it broke me up to tell his mother. The funeral was well attended by mosquitoes that the family consumed to express their grief. Very touching.
