Any recommendations for how to refinish the hardwoods in a small kitchen in which the planks run width-wise? The floor space is only about 8 X 4 or so, and there is not enough room for a floor sander to sand with the grain.

Any refinishing experts out there today?
*Chris,I won't claim to be a refinishing expert, but here goes.To remove old varnish, I suggest using a belt sander with 40 or 50 grit belts. Kneepads optional. Follow with a random orbit sander to get under the toe spaces. The corners can be stripped with a sharp paint scraper.I get best results by using the belt sander, ROS and then scraper in order before switching to a finer grit. Make sense? For the final 1 or 2 sanding grits, I would set the belt sander aside and use the ROS because it's easier to control with just one hand. Easier on the back. Make sure you scrape out the corners so they end up flush with the sanded areas. The idea is to "plane" them flush with the sanded areas. It sounds like hard work and it is. But an area the size of a sheet of plywood would take me less than 4 hours. Good luck.SteveB
