I saw a guy yesterday with one that looked kind of like a "dustbuster" version of a shop-vac, hanging from his shoulder on a strap.
I did not notice the brand, but did notice that it looked small, portable, and like a great idea. I guess you could make the power cord any length that you wanted, his was coiled up and maybe about 6' long.
The color was black, so I think that's craftsman? or maybe shopvac...
Don't know if this is helpful at all, just interesting that you'd ask exactly one day after I was surprised to see one so small, handy and portable. Perfect for cleaning up small jobs (especially when working in people's homes).

I bought one very similar to what you described at Lowes a few years ago. I don't think it has a rubber seal between the motor and canister, and not sure what the cord length is, but less than 6'. I got it for DW to use in her stained glass studio, so i don't use it or see it much. The whole thing is about a foot square, and comes with a mounting bracket to store it. I put hers on the side of a drafting table she uses as her cutting and grinding station. think it was about $30.00. I'll get the mfg. name if you can't find one at Lowes or HD.

It is a ShopVac and is called a Hang Up. Cord is 6', hose is 4'.
Lars doesn't like the shop vac model, because it leaks dust into people's homes. He already has one. The hose also cannot be disconnected easily. If you guys/girls know of another model with the same specs as I posted in the first post let us know. Guess we will have to keep looking.
Thanks for the input!Tamara
We have a Shop Vac 1x1 and have been pleased so far. It's about $40. http://www.shopvac.com/web/products/detail.asp?ID=6&HdnSource=index&StoreID= It's no Fein but it works well enough. You do have to remove the top to remove the hose. No problems with it leaking dust as my 20 gallon Shop Vac did. It has a foam filter which is covered by a paper disc filter which is held on by a ring. The paper disc filter has to be removed for wet pickup. I fixed the problem in the big 20 gallon Shop Vac by going to the yellow bags Shov Vac sells. http://www.shopvac.com/dev/catalog/detail.asp?id=166 They do the trick ........ been patching plaster and have had no leakage. Leakage is not a good thing; besides messing up your client's place, it also shortens the life of the vac. The exhaust air cools the motor and with abrasive drywall or plaster dust going through the motor, well ....................
Look at Ridgid at Home Depot, they make them for Sears but have a lifetime limited warranty. Their filters are very good and inexpensive, the cooling air does not go through the motor.
Why those specs? Exactly what does he want to use it for?
There might be some other options.
What I am wonder about is the requirement for such a some size. I can see application to where he would not want a 30 gal unit, why so small.
DW bought a vacuum a couple of years ago called a Cheetah II by the Love-Less Ash Co., Price, Utah.
It's actually designed for sucking up stove ashes and live embers around stoves and fireplaces. Very well built, fire proof, a filter you can clean without opening the canister, lots of suction through one major heavy duty hose.
Might be a little larger than what you've spec'd (4 gallons or so) and a little more expensive ($200), but aside from the fact that it doesn't have a variety of attachments, it's one of my favorite for small jobsites.
