What is Smart Board or Smart Panel? My sister, who lives in the Kansas City area, is looking at new houses intending to purchase one. She says that much of the siding in her area is either real or imitation stucco or is “smart board” rather than the steel siding that is so common here in Minnesota. I have searched the Fine Homebuilding site and have also used the Google search engine, but have not been able to get a hit. I would appreacite it if anyone could educate me on this building material or give me a link to its manufacturer. Thanks Irv Miller

In case you're talking about the Louisiana Pacific Product, here's a place to start:
Smart Panel
*I've met a few boards that seem to have a mind of their own.
*I was told I had the brains of a 2x4.Does that mean I'm smart?Ed.
*i I was told I have the brains of a 2x4. Does that mean I'm smart? In relation to some of the folks around here, yes.
*It "appears" that the LP "SmartPanel" is "different" than the "InnerSeal" siding that lead to the class action lawsuits against LP and the huge settlement by LP.Note the quotes. I've seen older LP panel siding that has the famous "LP InnerSeal 'Knot'" (see http://www.lpsidingclaims.com/identifysiding.html) that was falling apart.I'd check out the so-called "smartpanel" closely for the "knot." If I found it, I'd pass on that house: that's a personal opinion. Supposedly, LP has changed the product to avoid the old problems. OTOH, the "Smart Panel" has a 7 year warranty. Seems pretty limited for an exterior siding product, to me.(BTW, If you want to email me, I can pass along the names of some good home inspectors in that area.)
*The really smart ones know they best not mess with a guy holding a Sawzall.
