I went out to Vinalhaven, Me. for some replacement valleys and copper ridge cap work.
I was able to utilize this snow pile to get up a few feet to begin work.
More shots of the valley work too.

You don't have to sacrifice historical elements of a house in the name of energy efficiency.

When I saw this thread title, I was getting ready to give someone h3ll for using snow to stage up. every year it seems like I hear about somebody getting hurt because staging was set up on snow and then with this warming weather, the legs fall out from under...
But you're going to catch h3ll from somebody about that ssh cord tieing ladders together anyways...
;)
Did you seal edge of valleys or fit paper to slip over edge? Ooops - I see it now.
you picked a decent week for this one.
No shots of the scenery or trip out there?

Pif,
No scenic shots on this trip.
That was beautiful 3/8" nylon for securing ladders so no need for any he** to be given- besides I had snow to land on.
Don't know what you're talking about. Our staging is always safe.

John,
Thats the picture that inspired my title this morning!
Your next post shows some shaky looking staging- not yours I presume? The house looks like it had a lot of character, but badly run down now.
Walter
The bale staging was either from a FWD or from BT. The second pic was one I took 2 or 3 years ago (and posted 'em back then). I had been looking at a potential project house and spotted this "renovation" a couple blocks away. What do you want to bet that if i went back by there today, the staging would still be up?
Here is the 8X zoom on that pic. Add another item to your list of uses for C clamps.

By the time they got around to the other side of the house, they'd run out of their 'plan a' staging and moved on to 'plan b'.

That part of town used to be a nice area with good sized houses. But it declined somewhat and the good sized houses got turned into apartments. The size of this house, it could have been 2-4 apartments.
Nowadays some folks are trying to turn them back into single family residences, but the dozer gets more of 'em.

John,
I've actually used the c-clamp idea in a pinch!
Necessity is the mother of invention rings true with the attached pallet staging. It must be OSHA approved it has backrails!!!!!!
When I started out years ago I worked with some less than stellar set ups too.Now I'm older and like a firmer platform below my feet.

I'm just big and clumsy, and occasionally forget I'm still up a step or two when I step away from the ladder. My stuff has to be setup in such a way that if I have a clumsy moment I won't be rolling around in a wheelchair the rest of my days. ;)

I didn't have my camera with me last week when I saw a crew that had 24' pics overlapped and lashed together (actually 4 - they had a back rail) to give them a spread of about 40' between alumapole jacks.http://logancustomcopper.com

Makes me shudder just thinking about it. My fat butt needs sturdy staging.
One of those scaffold bucks doesn't have any ladder steps on it.
I get the impression they didn't buy their scaffolding new. :) And I can hear the guy assembling it justifying to his family/friends, "all the weight is going straight down, I don't need those extra welds. And I can just climb up the other side." He probably got a heck of a deal on it. And that looks like that nasty hammer-the-pin-in stuff (one bad weld on a pin and you're gonna die).
But it is nice to know that even if you leave your scaffolding out for a couple years and it gets all rusty and corroded, there are still folks willing to buy it.

Grant,
Thanks- looking forward to the barrel dormer pics that you and Duane are going to be doing.

Dale's out working on them now. If he doesn't get rained out, I'm going out later to get some shots.http://logancustomcopper.com

We've got lots of rain coming today - then a snowstorm for Fri. nite into Sat.
Another Spring in Maine!!!
Yeah, it's been about 80 here for 3-4 days, but we're supposed to get snow this weekend, but I'm off to Memphis for the weekend, so I'll hopefully miss it.http://logancustomcopper.com

Vinalhaven's nice. I built a house out there with my now-FIL ten years ago. Are you staying out there? That would be a heck of a commute from Bangor. We stayed at the hotel right at the bridge during the week and watched the tide come and go over the reversing falls.
Mike,
Yes I stay out with a friend on the Beach Road above the Round the Island Road.
Where was the house you built?
I saw Phil Crossman -the owner of the Tidewater where you stayed- yesterday before I left. I had done a big thru flashing job for him last Summer and early Winter. I asked him " How does it feel being the most handsome man on Vinalhaven?" He thought for a second and then " you get used to it." He has written a collection of short stories called Away Happens. He's quite a character.
Yeah, Phil, that's right. He built the outdoor deck on the house we did. He'd drive out in his rusty old gold Suburban.
The house was somewhere on the eastern end of the island, but I forget exactly where, on a small cove. The frame was a timber frame by Rockport Post+Beam, we did the first and third floor decks, stick framed the roof, and did the exterior. It was for the island doctor at the time, Rick Donahue.
Some friends of mine came out and met Robert Indiana, the "LOVE" artist, who lives in the big old mason's hall or whatever it is across from the Tidewater. They got a tour, met his pet geese, and said he was quite a character.
I'll look for Phil's book.
Have you read The Lobster Coast by Colin Woodard? It's interesting, about the history of Maine, talks a lot about the midcoast, Monhegan, Vinalhaven, the Penobscot river.
Anyway, sorry for the hijack, that's a nice looking roof. Looks like it's in good shape except for the valley?"This is a process, not an event."--Sphere
Mike,
Not a problem with a hijack- I think most threads evolve.
Yes Indiana is another character! That is really a beautiful Island. I love working over there.
The town is just finishing up an addition to the Library and I've got work to do there in a few weeks,
I haven't read the book you mentioned but I'll look for it.
Walter
I think it was a fellow name of Crossman from Vinalhaven that worked for my brother in S Car fo ra year or two before he went back home. Something about special medical treatment for his kid at the medical center down there.
Must be a relatve

Phil has a brother named Dave I believe who I think lives in the South.
If I recall correctly Phil might have had a special needs daughter?... I forget, it's been a long time."This is a process, not an event."--Sphere
Mike,
I think he has two daughters whom I haven't met.
Do you still go out to the Island? Was it your FIL's house you built?
Did you get a saw stand while on sale?
Walter
I haven't been out there since then. I spent three years on Nantucket after that and kind of got my fill of islands for a while.
No, my FIL is a carpenter, one of my mentors. He lives in South China (Maine). The house was for the island doctor, who also used to live in South China.
I forgot about the saw stand--it's been a busy week. When did you say the sale was over?"This is a process, not an event."--Sphere

"This is a process, not an event."--Sphere
Walter,
I got the book last week, thanks.
I won't be able to get to it for a couple of weeks though.
Was there another on the list after me or should I send it back to Mike?
Nice looking work.

Eric,
Thanks for the update and compliments.
I don't know if Mike intended anyone else to borrow it or not. Will you be seeing him at JLC live?
Walter
I'll see Mike at JLC and ask him about the book.
I take it you won't be there?[email protected]

I don't believe I'll be able to attend. In fact I've not been to any of their shows- maybe next year.
It's a great show for people that do a bag of mixed tricks. Being specialized as you are would likely have limited interest to you.
I'm taking a class Thurs. then hitting the show on Friday. Hope to pick up some free Bosch recip blades again this year. Last years are just about worn out![email protected]

Got the stand today. They were having a 10% off sale on ladders so I also got a 4' fiberglass stepladder and two rolling scaffoldings. Thanks again for the tip!
Mike
"This is a process, not an event."--Sphere
Mike,
It was a joint effort- I didn't know about the sale until I saw the thread here. Then just happened to be down your way for a Sawbones visit and stopped into that one.
I love it when a plan comes together!
Drove to West Hartford yesterday-snow from the Hampton tolls the rest of the way. Family function- had to go.
Walter
It's nasty out today. Driving last night must have been fun!

I saw Phil Crossman -the owner of the Tidewater
How old is Phil-my mother went to school with one of the Crossmans who owned the Tidewater, who would be now be in his mid eighties.
I used to go out to the island a lot years ago when friends had a house there.
I'll reply for Walter--Phil is in his 50's or maybe early 60's--the guy your mom went to school with must be his dad.

Funny thing - This AM I had an eamil form Matt Crossman who had worked for my brother Eric in SCar.Matt wanted his email because he ( matt) will be back down thataway next month and wanted to visit.I assumed he had already heard about this conversation from Walter or yourself, but it turns out that he got my email from one of the eelectricians who works both of these islands. The tioming just happened to be coincidental.

Mike has already given the correct answer just after your post.
Phil's dad is still on the Island i believe and still well.
