Read in one of the posts relating to Ice Dams that if you put Salt or Ice Melt into socks and drape on the ice dam it will create a channel for water trapped behind the dam to escape.
Well, it works!
I used some appropriated old nylons and filled with about 5 scoops of rock salt. I draped these over the Ice dam in 4 locations along its length. It took about 2 full days but it did melt channels thru the ice dam.

Just wait 'till you see what that salt does to your lawn this summer!
*How long have you been wearing nylons?I have to agree that the salt will do wonders for your lawn and flower beds.God I hate bandaid cures.Gabe
*May not need to resort to salty nylons after it eats a hole through the gutters
*Geez guys!Perhaps I should have started with a disclaimer!I was not intending this info to be used as a dam fix! (pun intended!)For those of us who have not experienced an ice dam problem before, these Bandaids might be helpful or necessary to ward off greater damage in the short term. There is a bunch of info out there for doing a proper fix which is a complete insulation/airation system. I have spent some time and effort to remove the areas of warm air infitration into my attic space which I believe I caused when I installed a bathroom vent last year.I dont feel that I have used enough salt to cause serious damage to the grass, roof or gutter. However, I consider these much easier and cheaper to fix than new roof, new roof sheathing, potenetial ceiling plaster repair, potential wall plaster repair had I not done anything to help remove damaging water. My feeling is, if the wound is serious enough, a bandaid isnt such a bad idea. Beats an infection and aputation!
*Kevin -Obviously the guys were egging you on.It's not that difficult to get bonked over the head in good humor at this site.I will have to try the sock trick on something else when the opportunity arises.Beats the heck out of sprinkling it which I think is wasteful.Alan
