I found several soft areas on my 27 yrs old roofing deck. I suspect that it is because of moisture trapped in the insulation underneath. I have both soffit and ridge vents installed. I suspect that because of 6″ fiberglass insulation between 2×6 rafters, there is no space left between insulation and the roofing deck for ventilation. This is a cathedral ceiling with sheetrock installed on the rafters. I was thinking of removing the roof deck, adding 2″ spacers to each rafter so there will be enough space for ventilation, and put a new deck. Is there any other solution since this approach would be quite expensive. Thanks for the suggestions.

There has to be an air space for the incoming soffit air to allow it to exit via the ridge vent. Otherwise, with no ventilation, all the material will deteriorate in time. IMO, Creating a vent space is the only answer.Unless you want to remove the insulation that is there and install a thinner , equal to, or more R value so that there is a air flow space.
How soft is soft? Sometimes you have congenital bad spots in the plywood, or unsupported edges, having nothing to do with internal moisture problems. Or the soft spots can be due to leakage through bad shingles.
no gotta do it. take off old deck and intall styrofoam baffles, replace and replace the rotten deck also. probably didnt need to say that but to much info is better than not enough.
