Software for speeding up carpentry work
Hello,
I was wondering if there are some generous people would who be kind enough to share their experiences using computer modeling program (e.g. SketchUp, Revit, etc.) and how it applies to selling their carpentry skills, estimating, making a cutting list, preassembling some of the components of their work, and, finally, having the building product delivered with efficiency and elegance!
In short, I’m a sole proprietor, and look forward to increasing my efficiency and elegance.
I’m, truth be said, not totally satisfied with many of the architectural drawings I get, and I’m not totally satisfied with the snail pace most carpentry works have to take to get built!
Thus, feedback is highly appreciated.
Thank you for your time in advance.
Regards,
Joe

Joe,
I am retired now. Started working the trade when there were pay phones. Needed plenty of dimes.
Paper and pencil with a straight edge was high tech.
Best of luck.
p.s. search here at Breaktime as there was plenty of discussions back a ways as these tools of which you speak started coming out.
Thanks, Calvin, so much.
I would recommend SketchUp. I've been working in construction since the late 70's. I've used pencil and paper, Datacad, Autocad and nowadays Sketchup. The full cad apps are in my opinion overkill for a builder or carpenter. SketchUp for me is the perfect tool for planning any size building or project. I use it to solve stairs, rafters and cabinetry. The learning curve is shorter than for other cad packages as well.
Sketchup is the way to go but I suggest you take a few hours going through the tutorials and practicing. And use a mouse with a tuen wheel on top. Good luck
I used SketchUp to produce the construction documents for my house build. I also used it to layout and dimension some of the framing members. I highly recommend it as a tool for increasing job site efficiency.
Thanks, Ian, so much.
I've been using DeltaCad for years-, but it's been discontinued. It was a cheap ($39.95) 2-D program- essentially electronic paper- but it was great for simple stuff.
Can anyone talk about producing dimensioned drawings with Sketch-up? 3-D models are great for design, but fabrication calls for dimensions.
I’d say sketchup is annoying for dimensions on drawings because you have to put all the numbers in yourself. I find that if you rotate or zoom the drawing in or out the numbers don’t move with the drawing so you end up having to erase them and do them again. Maybe I’m missing something. Overall sketchup is good for basic floor plans, built-ins etc, because your drawings look better than hand drawings but it’s really not a great architectural drafting program in my opinion. But hey it’s free and pretty easy to use.
Numerous software applications are available to expedite carpentry tasks:
CAD Software: Utilize Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software like AutoCAD or SketchUp for precise 2D and 3D project modeling, aiding in project planning and visualization.
Cutting Optimization Software: Programs like CutList Plus can optimize material cutting layouts, reducing waste and saving both time and money.
Project Management Tools: Platforms like Trello or Asana help carpenters efficiently organize projects, track tasks, and collaborate with clients and colleagues.
Estimation Software: Software such as ProEst or Clear Estimates allow carpenters to quickly generate accurate project estimates, saving time during the bidding process.
Inventory Management Software: Tools like QuickBooks or inFlow Inventory assist carpenters in managing materials, reducing time spent on supply management.
Mobile Apps: Mobile applications like Bosch Toolbox or DEWALT Mobile Pro provide on-site access to reference materials, calculators, and tools.
Safety and Training Software: Apps for safety training and compliance, such as the OSHA-NIOSH Heat Safety Tool, promote safety awareness and reduce on-site accidents that can hinder progress.
By employing these software tools, carpenters can enhance project efficiency, precision, and overall productivity in their carpentry work
