Solution to drywall buckets sticking:
We use a lot of drywall buckets for everything. As you probably know they tend to get stuck together – especially when not totally clean or compatable designs. I have tried several things to solve this, and recently came up with this solution: So far I haven’t found any problem with it. The buckets don’t leak and the hardware for this solution is unbreakable, adjustable, and reusable:
(5/16 x 1 carriage/ 3/8 washer / 3 – 5/16 nuts)

Yes, stuck buckets are a common problem. We have some that are staying stuck. Be interesting to hear the various solutions.
Mine: I have some scraps of tile underlayment that I cut into spacers. Stick them in the top of the buckets when stacking same. So far, so good. They come apart.

Sticking buckets must bother you really bad.
Im not wanting to shoot your deal down. I just didnt think it was that big a problem.
Theres two ways I know and I keep both around me .
I use a roofing hatchet to drywall and it has a flared out square edge. Thats the tool to rap buckets apart hitting the top of the handle casing or the top rim.
An air hose with a pressure gun on 100 pounds will shoot air to the bottom and they will pop out. No rapping.

What has worked for me is to place toe in handle of bucket below top and pull top bucket handle. If that does not work put hand on rim of # two bucket and repeat. If that down not work toss the mess and use the next stack. I use a lot of square buckets from cat litter from Sam's. They do not seem to stick together as much.
Yeah Tim, I repressed it for a while then decided I just had to deal with it. I think your buckets might stay cleaner than mine. We get mortar & thinset scum, paint, etc.
Every so often I remember to spray the outsides with silicone spray.

To get even with the guy that keeps giving you a hard time, go over to his bucket stash when no ones around and invert the bucket stack.
Stand on top and jump up an down for a while.

No one gives me a hard time. Or has buckets.

Let me know if you figure out a way to keep subs from taking a dump in them and leaving them in the house...

If your not carrying water in them stuck buckets can be unstuck by drilling a 1/8" hole in the bottom, you can go up the side a bit but not too high or you drill through both buckets and lose the effect, and using a blowgun nozzle on your compressed air line. Just place the nozzle over the hole and shoot.
Be careful as the buckets come apart if stuck firmly with a bang. In fact if you drill the center of the top buckets bottom you can shoot the top one a distance.
The hole is simple enough to plug with ####bit of wood, a shot sheet metal screw or a dab of caulk.
A coworker sprays his with silicon and they slide out quite easily.
Mostly I just beat the dickens out of them until they come apart sometimes invert the pair and standing on the bottom one's lip I pull up on the top one. Just figure the compressed air trick was a novelty of little practical use.
