Song suggestions needed

| Posted in General Discussion on December 31, 2003 09:34am

I’m installing a web radio onto my website and I need song suggestions. The theme is home improvement (of course) and I need stuff that might be found on Kazaa. Here’s what I got so far… (click)

Thanx!

First thought:  "(I see ared door and want to) Paint it Black" Classic Stones.

If you can stand Mr Byrne, "Our House."

Ugh, CRS cropping up, can't remember which group, but for some R&B, "Brick House."

A person could make a case for Sammy Kershaw music, as he's a former contractor.

Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)

We Built This City (On Rock an' Roll) - Jefferson Starship

Brick is Red - The Pixies

Houses of the Holy - Led Zeppelin

Out on the Tiles - Led Zeppelin

    Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel

Crown - Collective Soul (OK, I admit it's not really about crown molding)

Then there's a few that aren't really about building but about things that will require rebuilding afterwards.

San Andreas Fault - Natalie Merchant

Cities on Flame With Rock an' Roll - Blue Oyster Cult

Burning Down the House - Talking Heads

    Tumbledown - Catherine Wheel

And some that aren't about building at all, but describe emotions builders sometimes go through.

Dazed and Confused - Led Zeppelin

    Communication Breakdown - Led Zeppelin

Out ta Get Me - Guns 'n' Roses

Standing in the Rain - James Gang

Jesus Forgive Me (For the Things I Am About to Say) - Concrete Blonde

Beware of Darkness - George Harrison

Days and Days - Concrete Blonde

Scene of a Perfect Crime - Concrete Blonde

I Wanna Be Your Friend Again - Concrete Blonde

Ball and Chain - Big Brother and the Holding Company (With Janice Joplin)

Neckbreaker - Big Head Todd and the Monsters

Had to Cry Today - Blind Faith

Sparks Are Gonna Fly - Catherine Wheel

Don't forget that little subject of copyrights. I don't how that would play out on your site but you may well have some legal issues there.

Also - what's with the "it'll keep playing after you leave this site?" How will I get rd of it?

The issue of down loading aside, I think Bob has a point, if it's a commercial web site and the record company finds out and cares they could give him some trouble, the chances of them doing much about it I'd think would be slim, but could still be a headache.

        I'm sorry, what's your problem?

The guy wants to use someone else's property to promote a commercial product, mentions he wants Kazoo stuff ("free download"), and you get upset because he's reminded he has to pay for it?

This is a completely different situation than the download for personal use recently discussed.

If the RIAA decided to shake you down, from what I understand, it could get expensive.  I haven't seen anything on how things stand recently, the last thing I saw regarding RIAA licensening of songs to web radio sites was from several months ago:

        http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&node=&contentId=A31245-2003Jul9&notFound=true

House songs depend somewhat upon your taste in music.  These are a few that drifted into my head.  Fairly old, though, since I haven't been able to hear music for a couple of decades:

Oh, Don Willliams also did "If I were a Carpenter"

and Peter, Paul, and Mary had "The House Song", but its not exactly about building...

        http://www.noelpaulstookey.com/02-02.htm

They may also have done a version of Pete Seeger's "If I had a Hammer".

And "The House of the Risin' Sun", a great number, although it was somewhat of a different kind of house.  "The House of Blue Lights"

"My Roofs Got a Hole in it"

I vaguely remember a hit song from the fifties (?) Come onna my house (?) Rosemary Clooney???

One from even further back, a novelty tune: "The Railroad Runs Through the Middle of the House".

and for the younger at heart, although you might have to record it yourself...

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'd never have thought them up myself. I'm converting the ones I decided to use (most of them) and getting them into the jukebox thing right now. It'll take a couple of hours. If anyone thinks up any more I can still add them afterward so let me know.

"If I were a carpenter"  was Bobby Darin.  But if you can find the version  by Tim Hardin who actually wrote it, it's much better than Bobby's version  (imho) .

Another choice might be The Drifters " Up on the roof"

Or how about The Beatles song that goes "I'm fixing a hole where the rain gets in " I think it's simply entitled "fixing a hole"

then there's  "Our House  (in the middle of the street) " by Madness

does anyone besides me remember the folk song from the 60s called "Little houses" ?  little houses on the hillside, little houses made of ticky tacky...

Huey Lewis'  "workin' for a livin' "

    "Handyman"  by James Taylor

I could go on and on, but it's late and the bed is calling loudly

    1. caseyr | Jan 01, 2004 09:34am | #21

Oh yeah, "little houses made of ticky tacky" - written by a little old hippy lady about the skyline of Daly City.  At the time, I was living where I drove by those houses almost every day.  The words, in case you want to sing along:

Yep, you get an A on the memory test...

The Country Joe page reminds me that Country Joe's dad was a general handyman who worked on a place where I lived in Berkeley.  I didn't care much for Country Joes music but his dad was a darned good handyman.

          1. darrel | Jan 02, 2004 06:54am | #27

If you are going to broadcast these songs from your commercial web site, then this would be seen as a commercial internet radio station in the eyes of the RIAA and you'll want to pay the appropriate royalties:

            http://radio.about.com/library/weekly/aa013003d.htm

Since your site is commercial, but actually selling a product/service, then you might even need to pay a different set of royalties as your music selections may be seen as advertising.

If you place this on your own personal site, then it's not that big of a deal, but, technically speaking (in terms of the law), you should own a copy of each song you plan to broadcast.

And did anyone mention 'anything by the carpenters' yet?

          2. darrel | Jan 02, 2004 06:55am | #28

Oh...also realize that if you get more than a few folks using your stream, your bandwidth useage is going to skyrocket. Check with your ISP before doing this as many ISPs will start billing incredibly high rates once your bandwidth exceeds a certain point.

I remember sitting in front of the old b&w tv back in the 60s and watching a several minute cartoon special.

It consisted of scenes with drawings of hillside after hillside of housing developments while that song, 'little houses made out of ticky-tacky', played in the background.

Wouldn't mind seeing that again. A nostalgia strike.

F them....whaddamy spose to be a lawyer or an accountant dildo?

And Tim Hardin lived up in woodstock? What got into him that day?
