Hi,
What would be a better way of building a sound resistant wall. Double layer of 5/8″ drywall or 1/2″ soundboard and then 5/8″ drywall. On a set of plans I am bidding the architect specified double layer of 5/8″ drywall for sound resistance.
Thanks
Alex

It's almost always better to have uneven thicknesses if you're going to do double layers. There should be somewhere that you can find the STC ratings for both of those assemblies, I just can't think of where at the moment.

The architect should have the reference books to see if your alternate proposal has a higher STC rating than what he specified. He's the best one to ask.
