I am building a new house and am planning on putting a wood shop in the basment. I plan on no penetrations to the main floor (stairs on the outside) insulation between TJI’s sheetrock on joists, then suspended acoustical ceiling, suspended with non-metallic hangers. You think I can take a nap while my significant other builds cabinets?

Sure, especially if your bedroom is on the 3rd floor, and the shop is in the basement. The worst noise will come from that big router hogging out material. . . give ya nightmares of a dentists drill!!!

*The best thing you can do short of hiring a licensed acoustical engineer is uprate the floor strength a few notches and hang two or three thicknesses of 5/8" or thicker drywall on resilient clips - if you can find some that will take the stress. Sound absorbing material on top of the drywall may help. The best sound barriers are generally heavy and dense.
*Thanks- Actually we are going to have a 2" thick concrete floor on top of I jooists for the finished floor Should take care of some of the density.
*You can buy earplugs quite inexpensively! Good luck.
*Try to set up the shop so the power tools are at the end of the house opposite the napping area. Consider using the vibration-damping channels to mount the sheetrock to the TJI's (basement ceiling). The cost is not significant and the benefit is noticeable.Really want a good nap? Buy your significant other a handsaw, a set of chisels, and a few hand planes. Or, just keep the fridge stocked with beer. That's assuming you can nap through an occasional beltch or two.
