Source for baltic birch plywood

MisterT | Posted in General Discussion on May 11, 2003 05:03am

My lumber yard can’t seem to find a local source for baltic birch ply.

Any one out there know of a supplier in the southern tier NY/ northern PA area.

I am in Elmira NY an hour drive would be OK if I could get the stuff.

Thanx

Mr T

This doesn't answer your question but....

I called a supplier (an hour drive on the Interstate) about the stuff several weeks ago.

Turns out they come in two grades.

Ofcourse they stock the cheaper ($27 per 5x5 sheet) grade with the 'football' knot patches.

The better ones, with one side that is stain grade, is $35 - 37 (he didn't know because he would have to order a minimum quantity of one lift which has 22 sheets, which I would have to buy with no advance look at the quality.)

This does not help and departs from your request, but too bad you are not in Seattle area or I'd give you a few sheets.

Rudder (aircraft) pallets (pallets made in  Feruscargill for Short bros in Belfast, Ireland and used to ship over the rudders) were free in the wood lot since 1985 or so.

Each pallet had 4 ea 1.8 cm by 1.5 M by 3 M (roughly 3/4 X5X10, fractionally larger) plus 2 ea 6ft long sheets with a line of nail holes down the edges and a line down the center and 6ea 8mm bolt holes, otherwise pristine, 13 ply, no voids, perfect faces. Mostly stamped BS6566, Schauman Finply, so assume originally from Finland.

When the plane got stretched (-700), they switched the pallets to luan and then to 7 ply some type of fir., but still  the 5X10.  Luka built most of his sheds of these, only got a few hundred left <G>, gonna simply be sheathing on next house (after retirement). Those buggers over there also recently switched to ring shank nails, no fun to pull.

There were some problems in mid-90s as retired guys (this was in-plant free wood lot) would camp out to get all they could and resell, got to be a problem, so company switched to chipping the whole pallet in late 90's!  Anyway, they threw in a pallet a few years later with 3 rudders still inside!!!  Have switched back to putting the pallets in a wood lot again so no other $$$$ fiasco happens, but retired not allowed.

This might help - maybe not.

I used to get a flyer from a place called Niagra Hardwoods or Niagra Lumber or something like that. When I google for it, I end up at a strange shoppppiong site though. That could be because I don't accept cookies from strangers but thou art welcome to try.

Call your local cabinet shops and see who they buy from.  I am not in your area but around here there is a supplier that handles, hardwood, baltic, high grade white pine, hardwood flooring etc. and sells to cabinet shops.  Free delivery if $ 250 or more.  Not hard to reach if you are doing much of this type of thing.

Good luck, really nice stuff to work with.

I don't know where Elmira is off-hand, but is it anywhere near Erie Pa ? There's a place there called Woodcrafter's supply that has birch ply.

I have a flyer from Niagra Lumber, same place Piffin refered to.  No internet address (the flyer is from 1994).  May be worth a shot:

7 Elm Street, East Aurora, NY  14052

    1-800-274-0397, Local- (716) 655-2142

Might not even be in business anymore.  I tried the toll-free number, but got no answer.

    Another source you might try:

Northeastern Hardwoods (again, flyer is a few years old)

25 Morningside Ave, Salamanca, NY  14779

    1-800-235-8317, Local - (716) 945-2170

As an oh-by-the-way, HD here in CT sells the birch plywood, 4x4' x 1/2" thick for $25.  A local True Value also carries the stuff, but only in sheets 30" x 60" and smaller.

    Good luck.

A 9 year old flier for a lumber company that might not be around anymore... Thank you.  I feel much better about some of the clutter I have.  :)

Mr. T, sorry, no ideas for you.

If everything seems to be going well, you've obviously overlooked something.

        LOL

I had some stuff right on the edge of my desk the other day that I thought had been there less than a year.

        It was dated from 1996!.

Hey, what can I say, I'm organized.  The stuff comes in the mail, I file it.  It stays there till I need it, its replaced, or the house burns down.

        I never met a tool I didn't like!

I can go five places within an hour of here and get all I want in 5' x 5', 1/2" or 3/4".

      Excellence is its own reward!
