chillywilly | Posted in General Discussion on May 7, 2003 06:51am

Planning on installing sliding barn doors on a workshop and am in search of the appropriate hardware for the sliders.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks, I'm going up to Boston Friday, maybe I'll take a detour.  One of the responses mentioned that these doors tend to be a bit breezy - did you use a weatherstrip on yours?

If yes, how'd you do it?

Mine is just a storage shed.

there is a gap between the door and the wall.

since it is stoarge only, I don't worry about it.

wilmington builders supply (978-658-4620) is the correct name

bought mine about 7 years ago

Stanley makes a decent track and roller assembly. Check your local building supply or agricultural farm supply (sometimes cheaper) if you got farmers handy.

You may want to consider how you're going to seal this style of door from the weather. They tend to be a tad breezy.

The National Hardware line carries what you should need. http://www.natman.com/prodinfo_subcat.asp?cat=8 Check your local lumber yard, ag supply or hardware store that handles the National line- if they don't have it, they should be able to get it.

If you don't find what you want elsewhere. McMaster has a good selection. I think they call them door trucks, or door tracks. From itty-bitty to stuff for huge doors. mcmaster.com At least gives you some comparison.

Your local garage Door company might be able to get them for you. I can

Don't intend to answer a question you did not ask or have already dismissed prior to your post.

Have you considered segmental overhead doors(garage doors)?  The sizes vary widely.  We have found that a basic segemental door is less expensive than sliders.  Assembing sliders, and making them operate properly, will add about 10 shades of gray to your hair (or turn it gray if it isn't already).

Don't leave the barn door open. <g>

I have had good luck with the sliding doors on my Morton Bldgs (pole barn) shops.  Morton makes a set of weaterstriping for theirs that works OK.  They supplied the hardware on my doors and I have never had any problems.  Reason I like sliders is that when open they don't block your overhead lights.  I like to work with the doors open in warm weather and at night an overhead cuts out those lights.

Only  thing on sliders is that they need to be either all of the way open or all of the way closed or wind can play hell with them.

     Ron,

Lowes carry the tracks and rollers. Home Depot carries them too. Tractor Supply also carries what you need. There are sevral different roller styles to choose from depending upon how you plan to mount the hardware to your door.

They are drafty.  So what? Everyone needs a lil fresh air now and again. To help keep rain out, its a good idea to install a little roof dormer overtop the sliding track.

Barn door hardware is a stock item in any large hardware store here in Vermont.

I've seen people fram them up to weather seal them, but it's alot of

      extra work.

        Jeff,

Barn hardware is a stock item in my neck of the woods too. I just mentioned the "big box" companies for ron since ron indicated that his local lumberyards didn't carry the stuff.

Use Combo track or Cannon Ball track .They are a round track that emties all of the dirt and have a smaller slot that keeps the birds out . rolls smoother longer than any other track.

          1. Davo304 | May 09, 2003 09:22pm | #16

Don't know the name of this track, but here is what I used on my shed that I attached to my garage. I used the rollers that attach to my door by drilling ahole through the door top. I cut out acces holes on the interior side of the door so I could adjust /or change these rollers if they ever got bad. You'll notice the light shining artound this door..as earlier mentioned, this set-up is a bit drafty...but it works for me in my situation.

Think you could make those pics a bit smaller ? You got about 3.5 megs of stuff there......A liberal is someone who feels a great debt to his fellow man, which debt he proposes to pay off with your money. -- G. Gordon Liddy

            Boss,

Am still experimenting with this new digital camera and just learning how to post here on FHB. Will try later. Took me a hell of a long time just to get these posted. Sorry.

Cooper B-line makes the similar type product. Available in most electrical supply houses. The old farm barn stuff could be wilcox or whatever but it was a POS. Look at some of them. dented, splayed, and crusty with rust. New is better.

    http://www.cooperbline.com/product/SearchProduct/browse.asp?key=trolley&type=key&product=STRUT+SYSTEMS&redir=14

That is the trolley link for Bline. You get the strut and the hangers then put the trolley inside the strut. Bolt everything in place. More modern than the old barn stuff and lots more available. SS bearings, zinc plated finish on the metal. You can get galv strut or even SS if your pockets are deep.

I used the B377 for supporting an insulated door in my basement to cover the Bilco type opening. Mine is too light duty for a big barn door I've got about 100 lbs supported by the pair of casters.

Jack of all trades and master of none - you got a problem with that?
