source for storm door 33 in. wide?

Ruth | Posted in General Discussion on October 6, 2009 04:11am

It’s an old house, and I need a storm door of non-standard width. Ideally, I’d like one with a solid bottom half (so the husky won’t jump through it), with a storm/screen option on top. I know that Larson makes custom-width doors, but can anyone suggest other companies? Also, does Larson’s retractable screen (it rolls up on top) work well? It’s getting chilly here in New England, so I’d like to get this resolved soon.

    My choice would be Larson.
Don't know their roll up screens from experience.

Custom sizing is higher priced usually tho, and I can't see the details of your opening fit from here, but it can be easy to use a 32" with some shimming behind the frame mount.

      Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes, I think shimming might be the way to go.

done right, you would never see it. about a 3/8" ripped full length and fitted behind the L-frame as you install.Actaully, if what you have is 33" casing to casing right now, the standard 32" door might fit just right.

        Ruth,

Put in two Larsons with auto screen.

        Nice thing.

These folks had dogs, didn't want full view-took a chance on the screen system after viewing in the store.  They like it.  Seems I remember it can self realign and catch after pushing out-just slide the window up again and pull back down.

Does that sound like the one you're looking at?

Ask for the parameters of the frame/door.  They have a from-to as far as size the stock door unit will fit.

How the heck you been?  hadn't seen your name pop up, didn't know if you were still there.  You and Mark (picture) still come up on the screen here regularly.A Great Place for Information, Comraderie, and a Sucker Punch.

When we needed an odd size we just bought a wood door a little wider and had it cut down. Had to do a little dutchman work where the tenons popped through, but otherwise worked great.

This is the one I like best, but it doesn't come in custom sizes. It gives the most ventilation options AND keeps the dog in the house.http://www.larsondoors.com/storm_doors/products/830_46

The roll-up screen doesn't appeal to me as much, though I guess it would work.

You've all made good suggestions. Keep 'em coming, if anyone else has ideas.

Calvin, it's good to hear from you. I rarely even get to look at Breaktime any more, I'm doing a lot of blogging for http://www.vegetablegardener.com and other work for the Taunton Web sites. Mark left Taunton a while ago, but I still see him once in a while.

Mark and I type at each other every so often, he seems to be enjoying his life.

Glad you are still in the system, just in case we stop in for a cup of coffee.

Ruth, have you looked at Andersons line?  They have custom sizes.  I bought 2 earlier this year at local HD>  3 weeks delivery.

I have seen the Andersen ones and they are good. Did not realize they did custom sizing

Yep, at least through HD.  The one I bought was the 5000 series, major bucks, but the nicest door I have ever seen!!  89" in height, is an oddball!

          2. dovetail97128 | Oct 07, 2009 04:26am | #13

Anderson Corp. owns EMCO who actually manufactures and warranties the Anderson line.
Emco also manufactures several other lines as well. Just installed two Anderson 3000 series myself and learned that from the salesmen and verified it from literature attached to the doors.
Nice doors, still have one 2'6' to go .

You'd better say AndersEn, unless you're trying to stir up trouble between the Norskies and the Swedes again.

I had to buy two custom storm doors for my 90 yo two flat. Less than $200 each, delivered in a couple of week. IIRC the doors I bought were Larson. No problem at all.

  4. MVAgusta | Oct 06, 2009 11:43pm | #10

I just installed a 42" wide Larson that was custom ordered, $500 from Lowes. Very nicely built, looks good on an older home and was easy to install.
