This a set of spiral stairs I completed. This is only an in-progress photo but I am sure you get the idea.

Barrie: That looks sharp. Are the treads mortised into the column or is there some trick way you did that. It really looks nice.

Not all is as it appears!!! I will admit to being a bit nervous about relying on large tenons in a massive piece of wood to remain tight after many decades. This is the reason for the metal skeleton. The knee braces under each tread are very functional because the leverage on the 44" tread is substantial. The braces are always in compression and should always be tight. All the parts were made in my shop. Assembly was done entirely on site. The central column has 22 faces, each newel post has 16 faces and the handrail is a spiral octagon. The ballusters were black metal. I will go back to the house to get the finished project photo and post later.
Barrie: I am very impressed with your method. Vey innovative and I am recording this in my memory for future reference.

Stan, do you have a time of year preference for installing stairs? ie. low humidity during the heating months of winter vs the high humidity months during the summer
Cool!! I too would be very interested in the methods. At least whatever ones you'd care to devulge!

Thanks- I'll check it out. Had someone ask not long ago about putting one together. It would be one of those "do it for the experience" type projects!!ADH Carpentry & Woodwork

Barrie: I would say the worst time is in the hot humid days of summer. My shop is air conditioned.....and once in a while I set the stairs before the home has the air running. The worst case happend about 5 years ago when the air wasnt turned on for a month. I had the return nosings on my treads start coming apart because the treads were swelling cross grain more than the long grain on the returns were.
