What brand of nail was it? It looks like the wood found a weakened plane in the steel and just rove it apart along the fault line. Maybe the Smithsonian will buy it off you for their museum!

I'd guess that when the wire was being formed for the nails either a flaw got into the billet or two billets were being spliced together at that point. Even with the flaw in the steel it was probably less than a 1 in 100 chance that it would split at all, and to curl around like that is a "bonus".
