Splitting Second floor Rim With Sheathing

Hi All,
I’m framing 9′ first floor walls and did horizontal blocking about 2′ up from mudsill so that 8′ sheathing would land 4″ into the second floor rim joist (and a 2′ strip of sheathing would run mudsill to the horizontal blocking). This seemed like a reasonable way to tie the wall together. I am planning on sheathing the wall before raising it.
But how would I attach the second floor rim joist? IRC says I need to 6″ OC toe nail the rim joist into the top plate.
Does anyone have a method for this?
or should I just do the opposite and run 8′ sheathing from the mudsill up and horizontal block 2ish feet down from the top-plate? I liked the idea of having the blocking lower, so I didn’t have any conflicts with headers or what not.
