i think if you ask 10 painters which paint is best for a certain task, you will get 10 different ansewers. I have never used the paint your thinking of using but I have also not had much to complain about SW.
I like to use an HVLP sprayer for things like door, cabinets, trim... i have a mini mite that works great!
I would check what the paint label says, and also maybe check the SW web site or some such to see what paints they suggest for spraying.
HVLP
I got a hvlp sprayer from Rockler for about a hundred bucks. It's great. It's a stand alone unit with its own pump. You don't need a compressor. I would never have considered such a low priced unit, but Rockler has a good reputation. I've used it for all kinds of paints.
Go Graco
Sherwin-Williams sells a version of Graco's airless, hoseless sprayer. Some are even cordless as well. You don't need the more expensive 'fine finish' version unless you're also spraying oil-based paints and stains.
You might notice Lowes, and internet vendors, selling similar Graco sprayers for considerably less. I recommend these models; I get mine from Portland Compressor. The S-W version is different. Nozzles, extensions, etc., are not interchangable between S-W and mass-market models.
You control the spray by using different nozzles, which cost about $35 each. You'll want a nozzle extension and at least three additional fill cups.
For clean-up, I use a 20-gal parts washer I got at Harbor Freight.Fill with hot water, thoroughly clean the gun, than pump some 'pump armor' through it to protect the insides. I modified my parts washer to allow me to connect garden hoses to it, forfilling and draining.
As for the paint .... exactly which paint to use is the least of my concerns. I've never been steered wrong by a 'real' paint store- the sort of place that caters to commercial accounts. Far more importance is preparation, dust control, and drying time. I do make a habit of adding Floetrol to any paint I spray.
We spray this paint for doors and production trim all the time. We generally thin it 20-30% and spray with HVLP rigs. I use both an Accuspray pot system (with a 2 HP air compressor to pressurize pot) and an Apollo 7500 gun with a cap spray turbine compressor (95 model-4 stage). I have older 2 and 3 stage turbines by Titan and you can notice a definite difference in the ability of compressor to atomize the paint. Get the best one you can afford if you go HVLP. The Apollo 7500 gun is awesome. I use it with the 3M pps (paint prep system) gravity assisted pressurized cups. Easy clean up and storage.
Graco Airless
I use the Graco TrueCoat airless sprayer like in the link for the ProClassic. It has the vairable rpessure (important) and the paint can be used straight form the can with no thinning. These sprayers don't use the normal RAC tips like in the bigger airless rigs so don't think you can interchange them. I've got about 40 gallons through mine and follow the cleaning process closely. The tip that comes with the kit is pretty worhless, a 418 or or bigger. 4 is 1/2 of the fan so an 8" fan which will empty the quart cup in no time. Get some smaller fan and the smallest orifice tip that the ProClassic will handle (it's on the label).
