SPRAY PAINT – How far that overspray?
Got a picnic shelter to repaint. All angles and corners. Some twit set the trash can afire and smoked one corner. One one side the black Mercedes are lined up at the curb. Then there are the yellow condos, waiting. There usually is a breeze from some direction.
Is spray painting this thing a Bad Career Move?
I don’t know how far the overspray will carry. Homes are about 75-100′ off, likewise the black Mercedes. My gut reaction is to get out the pickle roller and drop clothes. The way the beams are set, it would be hard to get a square shot at anything but the ends because the next one is in the way.

100' is way much too close...
use me as an example as how painting can go catastrosphic....

100' on a calm day, hmmm, in theory that should be pretty safe. But black mercedes. That sounds like a liability I'd think long and hard on. Really, some paints are designed as a "dryfall" meaning that if you're doing ceiling girders, and the overspray falls, if it goes 8 ft, you can sweep it up. Formulations can't be that different from regular, can it? Dunno. I guess the more I ponder it, 100 feet, now bear in mind, I'd watch the weather and pick the day, I'd probably park my own truck downwind and do it. Then if I'm wrong I'll see it on my windows first!

Why do I think black Mercedes = overspray magnet?
One job in an underground garage had a freshly detailed Porche SUV, in black, waiting. We double tarped it, taped the tarps to the concrete, took pix of the whole thing, then sprayed.
It's pickle roller time. The ToolBear

The spray paint is black? Then you are OK. Otherwise, make it black and you will be OK.

It's not the color of the car, it's the made.
I don't know exactly how far it will carry but.....it will carry at least 25 foot or so to my wife's dark green car when you are spraying louvered doors. Actually I have dusted the work trucks before but since they are white it didn't seem to matter. Needless to say I will be forking up for a buff job to eliminate the stare I get when she gets in the passenger side. DanT
doesnt matter how far the car is away, when you finish spraying all of a sudden the owner of this beautiful flawless car notices something on the finish that(was always there) he hasent noticed before then your up the creek. lol BETTER JUST CUT AND ROLL.

Sage advice. This project is in Fullerton the Fair (CA) but might as well be in Kowloon. I think they are issued a black Mercedes when they hit the border.

Well...I was selling my pickup and had it all washed and lookin' good, parked and waiting for the new owner to come and pick it up.....and about 100' or so downwind I was painting my bulldozer a nice yellow color.
After I got done admiring the new look of the J.D. I noticed that the pickup was a similar color. How that paint ever got that far upwind is a mystery to me, but I spent the afternoon scrubbing with paint thinner & a re-wax.
You sure it wasn't your glasses that had overspray and everything else looked yellow.
ANDYSZ2I MAY DISAGREE WITH WHAT YOUR SAYING BUT I WILL DEFEND TO THE DEATH YOUR RIGHT TO SAY IT.

You know, now that you mention it...my dog looked a little pale too ;)
I have a black Pathfinder that is speckled in catapillar yellow due to some bozo who didn't give a hoot to tell me he was going to be painting. I was working only feet away from my truck at the time and the sound of the sprayer, and the direction of the wind didn't register in my wee brain.
Take all necessary precautions.
