I have a question regarding spray finishing. I am looking to by a spay system but I am very confused about making a good choice, I have done some reading on the subject and found mixed comments some positive other negative that it is very difficult to obtain a nice finish if you are spraying paint, either latex or oil. It is to be used at home on small furniture project using latex paint. My question can I buy a spray system at a reasonable price (300-$400) and be satisfied with the finish. Thank you !!!

In a word, yes.
I have an old Wagner Fine coat HVLP that works well on everything that I’ve used it on, from varnish (water and oil based), shellac, stains, nitro-cellulose lacquer and latex paints. The latex paints had to be thinned down a bit but it works fine. As a matter of fact I’ve just rediscovered it recently when I had to paint 4 shutter/panel bi-fold doors that I had been putting off. Layed down 1 coat of primer and 2 top coats in a couple of hours. I don’t have a spray booth so I have to paint outside so I have to put up with the occasional bug(s) landing on my new paint job but they can be knocked off with 220g sandpaper after it dries. Also if you are going to spray lacquer w/o a spray booth you’ll have to spray outside due to the volatility of the lacquer.
The fine coat is only an entry level HVLP system and it works well as a single stage turbine system (basically a vacuum cleaner motor). The more stages a unit has the more ability to push thru heavier materials such as latex paint w/o thinning.
I just received a catalog the other day from a place called Kingspor Woodworking Shop http://www.woodworkingshop.com and the thing that caught my attention was the Earlex spray station on the front cover. I was thinking about updating my Finecoat for a while and this caught my eye. It’s $300 for a 2stage unit. They also have a Fuji mini mite 3 stage system for 499. I just have to decide which one to invest in now.
BTW the HVLP units are the way to go. Very little overspray and you don’t need to drag around a compressor to use it.

I have always heard the HVLP units don't really spray latex paints well. Is it just a matter of thinning out the paint to get them to spray latex or should they not be used for it at all?
