Thank the lord, I can finally get square drive screws for hardibacker. they are the rock-on brand. They have a self countersinking head, which with the square drive actually works. The old phillips would always cam-out before you could get the head flush, even more so when attaching to a wall where you can only press so hard.
All this meant that I had to use a countersinking bit, (which lasts about a board and a half) and then go back and drive the screws. Like most things I’m sure the rest of you have had these forever, but I just found them and am dang happy about it.
Cheers

When you have a 50 pound box of Phillips head screws you just can't jump over to square drive because they self-countersink better. Rather than burning up a perfectly good countersink bit I chuck up a 1/2 inch masonry bit, hold the trigger down and go quickly over the board, sort of like bounce nailing. With a little practice you get a perfect well for the head of the screw every time and the bit does not wear out. I don't think they had hardiebacker in mind when they developed the self-countersinking feature of those screws. The board is just too hard. Works great in regular cement board.

Yeah I've done that too, but I sometimes get little too deep and the screw pulls through the board. But wait! I don't have to worry about that anymore. Luckily I don't lay enough tile to justify the 50lb box, I just buy as I need it. When you run out give em' a try. Justus Koshiol

Hey rez do you work at Home Depot or just really like them.If you do where at???I work at one down here in Texas(in fact I need to be hauling my a*s to work about now)
No but I think maybe RonT could be talked into working at one if you are really good at selling him on the job.Half of good living is staying out of bad situations.

I'm guessing my favorite tool is one I havent bought yet.
The Palsode framing gun. Been looking on Ebay but I figure its not worth saving maybe $75 bucks using Ebay if thats the best I can do there. HAve several on my "save" list and will just keep waiting till I see people miss a good deal (it does happen). I spose the one I'm supposed to want is the IMCT, right?
I figure it'll be like my screw gun was ...a never put down tool on so many jobs.

IMCT? eh??? Little slow here.
Ya the impulse framer. Go ahead and do the 10% big box card thing or whatever. Or take a drive to N.H. for no sales tax. It's the kind of a tool I want new without risk of hidden abuse. It'll be a value to you. Not for skipping along nailing sheathing as there is a wait period between fires of a second or so but great for renovating inside single shot stuff especially. Does have a gas smell when fired in enclosed areas. Great for framing. Get some galvanized shorter ringshank nails for sheathing. Keep newer gas cartridges as old ones puke out. Dated on bottoms. I've had mine a couple years now and still saying I should clean it sometime as recommended but never a problem except the old gas canisters a while back.
But then you'll start thinking about the Impulse trim nailer. Ya, been there too and it's as slick a machine. I've the straight one but they now have an angled one out. I'd go for the angled as more versatile in a close corner.
Folks like to see fancy tools on the site. Makes you look like you know what you're doing. Roar!
and it's true. Guilty as charged. Sometimes caulk the interior corner.Half of good living is staying out of bad situations.

That is a great tool. It even takes abuse pretty well. I've owned one for 2 years and put 10's of thousands of nails thru it with little complaint. Keep looking HD got my $ and I'd probably buy new again as you can't believe the abuse it falls into. Battery clips in the gun fail first, then the trigger switch takes a dump. After considerable time. The clips fail due to falls.
PS two batteries are essential.Jack of all trades and master of none - you got a problem with that?
Tried the paslode impulse framer, didn"t like it. I found it slow and loud compared to a air nailer. Plus the gas is expensive. I returned it after 15 days to HD when it stopped firing for some reason. I guess if you don't have air maybe, other guys seem to have no problem with it. I talked to my local rental place and they said they had so many problems with it that now they got rid of them and now use Hitachis. ANyway jsut to say, if you want to try it buy it from HD and you can return it up to 30 days later if you want.
Rez brother you got me cracking up my kids are looking at me like im crazy right now..:>)

Square drive screws are called "Robertson" drive. Being invented in Canada. They are the only drive available in most Canadian stores. When I left Canada last July I bought a box of every size. Try holding any other screw in a horizontal position on your Makita......
I work for a lumber yard in Canada, and Phillips and Robertson screws are very easy to obtain for most applications. After the big box stores drove out all the little competitors they have now cut the selection of products available on the shelf. Try the nut and bolt specialty stores for the screws you want. In many cases you can purchase them in bulk and it will cost less than the stupid plastic clam shell packages.
The funny thing about this thread is I have never seen a 50 pound box of screws as most boxes of screws weigh 27 to 35 pounds depending on size.
