My parents just moved into a house and the floor in an upstairs bedroom squeaks really bad. I screwed down the floor prior to the carpet going in. I have never heard a floor sound so bad. The floor joists are doubled 2x10s. I pulled back the carpet and made sure I screwed both joists really well. I cut a piece of the floor back to find the blocking and screwed that down as well. I think that the framing sub didn’t nail the doubled joists together very well. I also noticed that he used very little glue.
Short of pulling up the subfloor, does anyone have any suggestions. One guy told me to put tar paper under the pad and carpet. That sounds funny to me. Is there a pad or some kind of mat that I could put under the carpet that might deaden the sound a little?
