In preparation for havinag a house repainted or stained I am replacing cracked claboards and doing a bunch of renailing. The area is southern New Hampshire. The siding is about 45 years old and has, I believe, a solid stain. I am replacing the broken clapboards with primed cedar. A lot of the existing clapboards don’t need t be replaced but they are showing their age and need to be protected. Also, I am changing the color of the house from the failrly dark blue to a lighter color, something like a light green, pale yellow or maybe a cream color. With those things in mind, Is a solid stain still an option or would paint be a better choice? Does paint offer more protection then solid stain?
Thanks,
George

Paint or Stain
Go with the solid stain. Easier to maintain. In our neck of the woods (New England) you will be redoing it in 5-6 years and restaining won't require the prep (scraping) that paint will. I have a house with cedar clapboards that is stained. Stain won't peel....it might fade over time but that's about as bad as it will get. Peeling paint will look lousy and take at lot of time ($) to scrape and sand.
Agree...
...SS.
I restained my cedar claps with SS a couple of years ago simply to change the color. Original stain was fine after...I think it was 18 years.
