I am in the process of having a new home built and purchased custom curved oak stairs. The builder did not properly cover the stairs after they were installed. They are dirty, grimy and there are a few areas where they are stained from being wet and a few areas where spackling was left on them. Please help. Will simple sanding clean them up prior to the application of a clear stain? Will they have to be chemically treated/bleached??? Please help. Thanks. Steve [email protected]

Stephen, It is hard to say without actually seeing the stairs but sanding may work. The spackle should come off easily with a putty knife. Vacuum the stairs well to remove any sand and/or grit- sanding with dirt/ grit will only make it worse. If the grime is severe, you can wash the stairs with a mild solution of Murphy's Oil Soap using a DAMP, not wet, sponge. Let it dry thoroughly before sanding. The last resort is bleaching (oxalic acid). Good luck.
*god almighty stephen, get your builder to clean it up and make sure you don't pay him for it. what's he drive?
*Ditto Calvin. That guy won't be winning any FHB awards!

I've built and finished a lot of stairs, and have not seen any stains that won't sand out except for greasy food stains.Don't let your guys eat lunch on the stairs or near any unfinished stain-grade wood.
