What is the best way to apply stain to exterior rough cedar? And how quickly does it need to be stained? I have a 24 x 40 barn being built and feel like I should to stain it before winter (Kentucky) I have a compressor but have never used it for painting. thanks for the help.

If the siding isn't up yet, you can stain with a sprayer or roller on horses, or dip it...
If you're to stain it on the building, a good quality garden sprayer works very well. For a cedar stain, I use Penofen Red Cedar Marine almost exclusively and it works fine through the low pressure sprayer.
you back-brush after spraying, right?

That crossed my mind when you raised the issue of back-brushing...made me think how it would be a mess if it was just sprayed on in the vertical....
AND, one should also clean the pump and nozzle when finished... :-)
ok how do I put this lightly http://www.penofin.com/ http://www.penofin.com/ http://www.penofin.com/ It is the best stuff I have ever used my brother uses it on his IPE boardwalk in Louisiana floods about 2x a year stuff still looks great I use it up here in Washington state IPE decks as well as cedar decks. & on my current house I have a covered deck that had good wood under the 5 layers of paint I sanded off but it was fir which is not a good choice for outside wood but I didn't feel like replacing the deck so I stained it with penofin cedar & it looks great .
