The current (June 2001) issue of Consumer Reports has an article on deck stains. (Not exactly your question, but maybe of some value). Generally, opaque or semi-transparent offered more durability and lasted longer than clear finishes. Cabot Decking Stain 1480 (followed by Glidden Endurance) was the highest rated at 4 years versus most at 3 years and some at 2 years. They tested (and didn't list) some that only lasted a year. Messmers either wasn't tested or didn't make it to 2 years. -David
*Cabot's hands down. I've used it on quite a few cedar sided homes and have gotten good performance in each case without exception. My first home I pre-stained cedar lap with cabot's and after 10 years it was beginning to look as if it needed another coat.
