I have a stairway that is 36″+ wide, and I am looking to install a handrail with minimum projection from the sidewall to provide maximum stairway width. I will not be code compliant after handrail installation but want to still maximize the width of the stairway.
I am looking for a vendor who would have brackets that would allow a railing with adequate grip dimension, and clearance from the wall for finger clearance.
Anyone know tricks of the trade, or a vendor who would have brackets or who specializes in stairway parts that would help solve this dilema. Thanks
Jeff

Our code calls for no less than an 1 1/2" space between railing and wall. Handrail can't be any more than 2 5/8" wide. The wall rail brackets at HD and Lowes work. Code aside, that inch and a half is about bare minimum for getting a good quick grip on a handrail. They are there to prevent falls. And, the handrail projection into the stairwell doesn't have anything to do with the width of the stairway and code, it's wall to wall, unless you're commercial, you're within it.

Bucksnort is right. Any less than 1.5 inches and your knuckles start bumping.
