I am building an L-shaped staircase with winders at the L and using 1-1/8″ ply for the treads. I have a 7/8″ nosing on each tread, and currently the cuts on the treads are straight up and down (no bevel or rounding), and the risers are vertical.
I am planning on carpeting the stairs later with sisal or other natural fiber, and had a couple of questions about my treads before I finish assembly: 1) Should I round over the edges of the treads at the nosing? I assume I should, and I am currently thinking about using a 1/2″ radius router bit. 2) Do I need to worry about filling the void in the triangular space between the tip of nosing, bottom of riser, and top of riser, or can the carpet by pulled across the void without a problem?
Thanks,
AG

you should have a nosing ... about a one x one.. the carpet (sisal ?) will be tucked and should cover everything

AG, I rounded over mine before carpeting them. I don't like the idea of the sharp corners tearing away at the new carpeting. Any round over is better than nothing. That 1/2" is fine.
Filling the void isn't necessary. There will be a dead airspace in there. It has never been a problem in any applications that I'm aware of.
I've heard it called "waterfall" sytle vs Tucked and tacked. Tucked gives it a different look. I tucked one set that had 1.5 thick treads and padding. It was too fat. I didn't like it....shoulda "waterfalled" it. Your 11/8 is boaderline for tucking, as long as they don't get the padding wrapped around the nosing.
