Been doing the trim and finish work on the attic (3rd floor) of an 1896 Victorian. This is the stair railing. There were three places places where the railing killed into the angled ceiling. I had the shop custom make the spindles to finish out these areas. Pic. #520 is a small railing leading into an octogon turret.

very nice work and an interesting solution to a unique problem. I like it!!
Veddy nice. What are the floors?
Thanks, the floors are actually some type of laminate. I had initially proposed 1/4 sawn white oak, with a walnut border, but they had already 'got a deal' on this flooring. Not very appropriate to the rest of the house(it is all original and very well preserved), but I guess the owners are happy with it.

I thought so. The sheen looked a little too perfect for a sanded and finished wood floor.
Nice job, really like the newell posts. Do you nail your ballusters under the railing or just use the fillet?
Thanks, I nail them and use a fillet. The bottoms are fastened with iron dowels.

Thanks Stan, thats a real compliment coming from a stair man such as yourself.
P.S. I'll try to stay North of the border :)

I thought you might be close. I'm in WI in the La Crosse area. I get to Rochester sometimes for cabinet installs, but haven't been able to get much further. I wouldn't mind going to the 7 Corners store sometime. Hey, you ever go the the UBC sales show in Rochester in April? That's usually a good time!

I built a house for my brother in Rochester about a year ago. Man is that city growing. Do you work for a cabinet company?
I haven't ever been to the 7 corners store; I have a local tool dealer that stocks about 99% of everything one would ever need. You should check it out sometime if you're ever in the area. Its about an hour past Rochester. Never been to the UBC show, might have to check that one out.

I do occasional sub work for a mid to high end cabinet company in this area. We sometimes do overnighters and knock out a good sized house. There are certainly plenty of 'em around.
You'll have to let me know about that tool store. Like many many others, I love a good tool!!
