Hey Allen, haven't seen you around for a while. Too bad you're not around here, I'm looking at a nice craftsman style staircase that could use you<G>

Good luck, but with your talent, you shouldn't need much!

Someone's got it in for me, they're planting stories in the press

Whoever it is I wish they'd cut it out but when they will I can only guess.

They say I shot a man named Gray and took his wife to Italy,

She inherited a million bucks and when she died it came to me.

    I can't help it if I'm lucky.

That's me...are you changing venues, or just jobs? And what other forums are there to hang out?<G> Someone's got it in for me, they're planting stories in the press

It all depends on the work opportunities, I have work out the wahzoo here. I would not move at all without being in a secure employment situation. Thanks, Allen

I suspect there may be more work up in the lake towns of SW Michigan than down in South Bend.  From New Buffalo all the way up to Saugatuck, there is a lot of lakefront development.

It is where the Chicagoans with money build their weekend homes.  Real architects get commissions for many of these, not just builders with a nephew that is a CAD drafter.  If you can get into some of them, you'll see some unusual millwork that will knock you out.

It is not that big a drive to get up there from South Bend, and you might be able to do business by shop-building a lot of your work.

I can't believe how many vehicles I see with Illinois plates in Michigan now.  It's nuts.  Yesterday I saw close to 50 cars on I-94 alone.  I wonder whats wrong with their side of the pond.

How could you possibly complain about out-of-staters with money, bringing homebuilding work to your community?

        1. Stilletto | Jul 15, 2007 05:50pm | #17

I wasn't complaining Gene,  I just can't believe the flood of people I have seen in the last few years.  Is real estate that sparse over on their side to make it worth driving over 4 hours one way to get away?

Last time I looked into this 9 times out of 10 they bring contractors over from Illinois.

These architects from there have their own group of builders that they use or like to use and stick to them.  Rare is the occasion where they use locals.  This was the case a few years ago,  I hope that things have changed since then.

          Matt

While the Chicagoans may be hiring their architects over there, I'll bet that Michigan builders are doing most of the work.  Consider all the issues with GC liability insurance, WC policies, etc.

If you are from Chicagoland, looking for idyllic dune-terrain lakefront, sunsets over the water, etc., you simply have to make the trek to Michican, because everything in Illinois is taken, and over there, the sun sets out in the prairie.

Look up Von Der Heide architects, right up in Douglas.  This clip is from their website.  Bet you could build those eyebrow dormer frames on the ground and hoist 'em up with a rig.

A few years back I tried to get in on the lakefront projects.  Every project I bid on ended up having a truck in the driveway with an Illinois liscense plate.

Insurance and other issues aren't that difficult to get around here,  HO pulls the permits and they can have anyone they want to do the work in the carpentry field.

That house is very sharp.  One that I would enjoy framing.
