Standing Seam metal roof

oldblue | Posted in General Discussion on March 21, 2009 06:00am

Looking to install metal roof on our Vermont camp. I would like to install myself although I have no experience with metal, I have done many shingled roofs and I am sure with good directions would not have any trouble. Does anyone know of a good supplier in central Vermont., or could recommend a good brand. Thanks

You could check with Iron Horse roofing in Tunbridge, VT.  or Mad Cow roofing in Croydon, NH.  Both companies do fabrication on site, and a third company that I have worked with are willing to sell you the material and let you do the install yourself.  I don't know if Iron horse or Mad Cow will do that.  Both Iron Horse and Mad Cow use a true standing seam and not a ridge lock system.  In my mind, a better product.

But, I have seen both of these companies work and they do excellent work.  If the roof has a lot going on, (chimney, stink stack, dormers, etc)  I would leave it to the pro's.

Both Iron Horse and Mad Cow are out there on the web if you type in their name into a search engine.

I've done a few farm shelters. The material comes in different guages and cost. Many different colors and trim for just about everything. I got the metal panels from a farm supply store up here in canada. They had all the info needed to do a good job.I've only done gable roofs.
The key is the prep job. I removed old roofing and repaired the deck.
I was able to handle 12ft panels myself but all the predrilling was done on the ground. The panels I used specified the screws to use, rubber washers and 3/8 holes so there is some movement. I had to cut most panels to the proper length.
The stuff i used required strapping the existing deck with 2x4 strips every three to four feet. Attach the panels to the strapping. Lots of work but doable for the average guy on a job like yours.
As I mentioned, the key for me was the prep. The panels I used did not allow for anything out of square. If the roof itself was not square, I made sure the strapping was square on the roof.
