Stapling hardiplank

seeyou | Posted in General Discussion on March 14, 2005 10:46am

Just got a call from the carpenter who’s framing/triming a house we’ll be doing some standing seam copper roofing on. He wanted me to make some flashings so he could go on and run his siding over a pediment. The way i do my standing seam, there is no seperate piece that turns up the wall. The roof pan is bent to verticle and and the siding would counterflash it. I told him to cut the bottom piece of siding, tack it, and we’d take it out and re-install it when we’re finished roofing. He said he couldn’t do that because they’re blind stapling the hardiplank. I explained how to do what I needed him to do, but has anyone ever heard of stapling hardi? I’ve read the instructions and don’t remember staples being accepted.

You’re almost as paranoid as the people that’re trying to kill me.

I got a Bostitch on my desk..wanna practice? it'll do 5 pcs. of paper.

seriously, it just might be ok..wide crown and not over driven. Has he started yet? Seems the legs might go akimbo once in awhile or curve back.

i love it... a siding that will last forever being put on with a fastener that could corrode thru in a year in the wrong location...

Mike, what's that nail spec and source for blind-nailing the FC clap siding?  I know you posted it once before, but I cannot find it.

And, are you using the same nail for the little bit of face-nailing you need to do, where you don't have a lapping piece to cover?

About half way down are the guidelines from hardie.  I use roofing nails for the blind nailing and for anything exposed, like the top piece and the butt joint corners, I use stainless siding nails.  Once painted, you don't see any of the exposed siding nails, they cover with paint very well.

You are correct sir.  Hardie doesn't accept staples, at least for the lap siding but I can't imagine it would be any different for other type.

They even have the little staples the line through it for the illiterate.

Yup, that's what i thought. I've had to draw hammers with this guy before. He got run off from one builder I work for and showed up working for another one. He likes to think up his own way of doing things without looking at the big picture.

Tell him or the GC that they're most likely voiding the warranty by using staples...

It's been a while since I read the instructions for hardi, and for one, I know staples ain't on there, and for 2, I believe it has something about "follow these installation instructions or your warrantee is void"

      1. seeyou | Mar 16, 2005 12:52am | #7

Yeah, I really don't have a dog in this fight. We're gonna do the siding that affects me the right way and if this hard case wants to make a mess of the rest of it, that's his and the GC's business. This GC has at least three current suits against him for problems this framer has caused and he still keeps subbing him. I'll just do my job right and let the rest of the chips lay where they land.

Now, on to some serious business, Mr. CAG. Looks like my UK Wildcats are on the same side of the bracket as your KU Jayhawks. We'll have to do some friendly wagering if they both get in the final four. Whataya think? You're almost as paranoid as the people that're trying to kill me.

        1. CAGIV | Mar 16, 2005 06:40am | #8

If you think either UK or KU are going to get to final four, I'll be game for what ever you feel is appropriate lol

          ;)

seriously thought, I know it's bad, but I havent even looked at the brackets yet, havent had a chance.

Staples?  They might as well use white Elmer's glue.

Not trying to be an ass but why is that I have used them back in the 90’s cause that’s what the the GC told me to use and they did fine and are still holding today

I come down on the side of staple no Bueno for a couple reasons. One is manufacturer doesn't recommend it and other is I don't like it. Fasteners are the Achilles of fiber cement, related to it's brittleness weakness. Great material fiber cement, great fasteners staples, but not together.

Read the Hardie installation instructions. They only alow sheathing nails or screws.
