does anyone know of a website that could help me calculate what size steel i-beam i need to span 40′? i was told by a guy that designs plans for our home building company that trusjoist.com would be the answer to all of my problems (but that doesn’t appear to be the case). i’m building a 40’x40′ building within an existing warehouse. i would like to clear span the 40′ with an steel i-beam supporting tji’s, all resting on 2×6 walls (at least that is my initial plan). the top will be flat storage space. any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
jud

Try the American Institute of Steel Construction:

Steel bar joists would be less expensive than a solid beam. Try:

In my market, the fabricated steel suppliers will size a beam like that for you, given all the needed data. Have you tried this in your location?
given all the needed data
Boss Hog will likely give you the same comment like he shot back at me when I posted a calc for strength a while back, but you gotta know how to calc the loads first to give the needed data to calc the beam strength. The other posters gave you methods to calc the beam strength for given loads?
