I need to know if a steel pre-manufactured chimney has to go through the roof to be code compliant. My plan is to have the chimney exit the house to a tee then head up. Heading vertically up inside the house is not practical as I would have to chop up one of the perlins (timber frame home). I have built heavy-duty brackets (2), one for the bottom and one to be installed at the roof line. The bottom bracket is customed made to accomodate the 16″ roof overhang as the brackets the kit came with assume the chimney will run vertically tight to the wall. The roof bracket (againd custom made) will be bolted to the house and the fascia, the pipe secured to the bracket with adjustable threaded clamps. The brackets are customed deisigned 2 x 2 x I/8 angle, fully welded. The brackets I made are much stouter than the kit supplied sheet metal brackets. I realise it may look a little funny to have the chimney stand away from the house but this chimney is only temporary until permanent mortared fireplace and chimney is built (couple of years away).
I am not afraid of cutting through the 10″ SIP roof but figure the less holes in the roof the better. The chimney manufacturer indicated my plan would not meet code (in this case the Ontario Building Code) nor would be acceptable to my home insurer.
Any suggestions?
