Maybe this is a real easy question, so forgive me for asking.
I have this multi input/output amplifier (Matrix Audio – 4 in 6 out). Works real nice.
Inputs are simple dual RCA plugs. Outputs are already in place. The wife wants me to hook up a new input – a stereo receiver – so’s she can hook her iPod up to it and play it thruout the house.
The attached pic is the stereo’s manual’s diagram (Yamaha RX-397 – a simple one).
I plan on hooking up the iPod to the AUX holes.
Where do I hook up the other end of the RCA cable going to the amp? To one of the outs for the tape or MD?
These are the same pic in two sizes. I want to be sure the detail of the fine print can be seen if needed.

it appears to me that you just hook it up to the MP3 Aux port. I hooked up my XM radio through that and it works great.

I'm sorry, I've confused you.
I am planning on hooking up the iPod to the AUX port. See the stereo is NOT hooked up to speakers. It's output will be directed to the multiamp I described. From there, speakers thruout the house are located and controled from whatever that location may be.
My question is where do I plug in the other end of the RCA cable coming from the stereo and going to the multiamp. At the multiamp, it will be input #3. At the stereo, it will be output " ? "
Will the output from the tape or MD work for this application? And if so, should the output of the ipod go into the corresponding input (MD or tape) rather than the AUX?
What the heck is a "MD?"
MD is mini disc, a format that didn't catch on.
Why not hookup the iPod which directly to the multi amp. An iPod doesn't need a preamp to ready the signal for amplification.
If you use a stereo you'll use the preamp out, your ?, to go to the multi-amp. That output is available will have short u shaped jumpers between preamp out and preamp in.
I see no jumpers or other forms of output other than the speakers (2) and the two outputs (MD and tape).
The direct to the multi connection.... I'll have to run to the local Radio Shack and get a joiner for the two RCA cables. The run I gotta make is about 40 feet. But, we can make that input #3.
But back to the stereo. Say she wants me to hook up an fm antenna and then wants that run thru the whole house. I'll still need an output other than the speakers to run to the multiamp. We'll make that input #4. Which output?
You need 1/8" stereo to RCA from IPOD to aux in. RCA to RCA from MD ( you are not using one) OUT to the AMP. Speaker OUTS are already amped and will feed too strong a signal to the Multi amp input side. The MD OUT is not AMPed it should be a LINE out.
You can get long RCA cables but also RCA to RCA adapters are available.
