Good lord man those 70s selfstickem tiles had a good adhesive on them.
Going to lay ceramic tile on pop’s kitchen floor. Under the carpet was a decorative? redorange adhesiveback ft sq vinyl and under that was a white linoleum?or vinyl 8inch sq self adhesive tile.
Stuff is stuck stuck stuck on there. Bloomin’ hammer and chisel time stuff. 3/4s done but it’s ugly. Shouldn’t have opened my mouth and gone with new stickems instead. Roar!
Anyway, I’m going to thinset right to the 3/4 plywood which is laying atop the diagonal laid 1x12s because of height concerns.
Was hoping someone might have a secret remedy to share removing these adhesivebacked vinyl squares. As it is it’s a battle not to gouge the plywood fer cryin’ out loud.
Help me Help me!

Who ever invented work didn't know how to fish....
Make it disappear. Put 1/4 luan ontop of the tiles with liquid nails or something. Make sure you spread it evenly though. But you're already 3/4 of the way done so.....keep on truckin'.

Use an "old" electric iron. then some acetone to clean up the left over goo. - just don't do it without the windows wide open and a good breeze. Worked great for us, did 10'x10' area in about 1 hour. (ok maybe 2 hours).
One rumor I've heard is to use dry ice to super chill the tiles. I think its supposed to make them brittle and easier to chip up.
I've never done it this way, and I don't actually know anybody who did, but it sounds like it might be kinda fun if you don't get frostbite.
On the other hand, there's probably more effective ways.
I don't know if it would make the tiles more brittle, they're not very flexible to start with. But it certainly could make the adhesive more brittle. I've seen people chilling used gum on the sidewalk and chipping it off.
Hmm, 1970's 8 x 8 tile. I doubt that is self stick but it may be asbestos.
Oh yeah, heat gun!!! The cat's meow.
Why didn't I already know that? duh.
