Hi folks. I have a painted brick chimney that I would like to face with stone veneer, either natural or man-made. What’s the best way to prep this surface? Do I need to strip or grind off all the paint (messy), attach some sort of substrate (wire mesh or cement board), or what? Appreciate any advice I can get on this project.

finally something I know about. we allways use plaster lath,
secured with stacons w/ fender washers on brick or block
or p.a.f. on concrete--- besure lath is installed w/ the cups facing up
and to the outside. d.w.

Just attach something to the brick, like stucco wire or metal lath or brick ties, using tapcons or the like. I did a project this last summer where I was building out the stone veneer a lot, and we put rebar stakes in the old stone buttress(probably 2 or 3 stakes per square foot) and rebar stakes in the back of the new stones that were being veneered on. Build up the new stone a foot or two, then backfill with concrete.
By the way, the latest Fine Homebuilding has a little article on stone veneer- it would be helpful if you've never set stone before.
