I’m trying to calculate the weight that 4″ Tennessee Field Stone adds to a fireplace. Does anyone have a rough idea what 1 square foot of stone weighs — 4″ thick?
My guess is somewhere between 20 and 35 pounds but i’m hoping someone has a better guess than mine.

Here is a link to weights. Rock is typically in the 160 pounds per cubic foot range. A four inch thick piece 12" x 12" would be one third of a cubic foot. That puts your stone at 53.3 pounds. Must be why it hurts so much when you drop one on a finger.

Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
I've always used 40 PSF for the weight of face brick. Since that's a hair less than 4" thick, that would be a little more than 120# per cubic foot.
But I've heard that rock is about 2 tons per cubic yard. That works out to about 150# per cubic foot.
That oughta at least get you in the ballpark.
brick is definitely lighter than stone

hmmm....maybe not in Hawai - I will grant that Maine has heavy rocks...
I thought everyone knew that a 'stone' is 14 pounds -
"there's enough for everyone"
Bout the same if it's on your finger.

Like being caught between a brick and a stone place, eh?

I don't have the figure in front of me but i think the final weight turned out to be around 30K pounds. Thanks much for the input.
Of course the direct approach would be to get on, measure, and weigh it...
My stone masonry heater weighed ~14K lbs (just a guess, I didn't weigh mine)
