Storing Brad Nails

JMadson | Posted in Tools for Home Building on April 11, 2008 06:20am

How do you guys store your power nails and brads, i.e. assorted 16g and 18g nails?

There easy to store when the boxes are full, but as soon as you use a bunch, it just turns to a mess.

Clear plastic storage containers with removable dividers.

Inexpensive and I can store an assortment of nails without having them get mixed up. As needed I refill the storage boxes out of the original boxes.

I currently use a couple of old plastic tool cases hogged out with the boxes in them.  Intend to use some of the Rubbermaid/Stanley/Zag type boxes.  I dedicated about four feet of shelf in the van to this type container.

The problem is it gets pretty heavy and is rather disastrous if you forget to latch them properly.  Instead of 52 card pick-up it is 10,000 sort.  Will probably put about half a box of each size.

I bought some of the HF 23 ga pins the other day and they look pretty good.  Extremely cheap.  Nobody really charges much for them but the shipping usually gets you (except for Amazon Prime, but many of the ones are not eligible).

HF has 23 ga. pins?  COOL. I agree, shipping is a bear. HF is 5 miles from my job site.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

A bit off topic, buy my local Ace Hardware (which is very large and has nearly everything) doesn't have any nail gun nails at all. Not even the ubiquitous 16 or 18 ga nails. According to the guy there, he doesn't get people asking for them - which I was stunned to hear.

My ACE guy told me a few years ago that they didn't sell pneumatic nailers or nails because of liability issues.  They must have resolved the problem because they've been selling both for 2-3 years now.

leave the nails/pins/brads in the factory package....

secure their flimsy cardboard package with duct tape...

slit the top for access like a kleenex box...

put he whole shebang in the Stanly box....

secure them from ratteling around with styrofam fillers...

      I use a varity of sizes in 15, 16, 18 and 23GA...

      it works...

I used to get little brads in small plastic tubes.

We had a recreation director named Brad and sometimes I would have to leave him a message. So I would leave him a message thus:"Hey [tape a little brad here],Your life guard called in sick today.~Peter"

          I remeber those tubes...

still got a few laying around with the brads still in them....

guess I don't use too many brads in the course of a life time....

I built some nail boxes out of baltic birch.  Ive used them for a while.  One box keeps 15 ga nails. Each side holds about one box of nails from the store. In the other is I keep the boxes of 18 ga.  Sometimes still, after I open a box of 18ga, I have to tape it up to re-enforce it so it doesnt fall apart.  I'll try downloading pics

drop the case from the 2nd or 3rd floor and you'll have one hellava mess.....

store the case flat and not on it's edge and it survies and works pretty well....

It sounds like you speak from experience.

            not me....

            just heard about that happening........

cubes of styrofoam solve the hold together issue.....

use the tray flat and all is good.....

another something that works is to wrap the box they come in in duct tape and slit the top to get to nails/brads.....

when the box gets low combine the left overs with a new box...

        and NAIL ON!!!!!

I have used the clear tupperware containers for years and not had a problem. I always store them flat. I have 3 , one for 15 ga. 1 for 18 ga., and 1 for finish staples.

There are some pretty cool storage thingy's at your local craft store for a good price.

Also, tackle boxes can be pretty cool.

Plano is a tacklebox maker, but they also make some pretty cool boxes that can be used for storing small screws and nails.

Mine has 3 drawers that pull out, and the top lid opens.  I just check it and reload a coupla times a week, making sure I have at least a small amount of screws, nails and all that I might need.

I hate taking time off of the job to run a silly errand.

            What are you fishing for?

I think they have canceled our salmon season here.  Rats.  We have a jet engine boat due to where we fish.  It's pretty shallow so ya gotta be able to power up get over the gravel and sand bars.  Anyway, we tried fishing on the delta last spring...rats, the jet engine sucked up all kinds of "grass".  We had to nickname our friend and boatmate Steve, "The Creature of The Black Lagoon".  By all rights, he should have had a crash helmet for the passing wakes...lol.

Anyway, so DH decides we are going to fish for stripers in the delta and he needs a trolling motor...okay I'm fine with that, I've seen them before.  About the size of a milkjug with a handle.  Is that what he came home with????  Yikes!  He said, "No honey, I said Kicker Motor".  It's about the size of my 14yo DD, if you rolled her up twice...no wonder he called to say he would be late...he NEVER does that...lol, oh well.

Not sure if I will ever get it right, but I will continue to roll that marble around my pea-brain until I figure it out.

Had a buddy who used to run jet boats at Glen Canyon, he was always inviting me to go, alas, I was always too busy working...

Yeah, I heard about the 'trolling' motor  LOL

if it's cold, the stomp & grab is out...

Dunno if I can free up a whole weekend or not, could do a days worth OK. Weekend might work better for Glenn, too?

Gotta go to NM this coming weekend, so can't play then.

Me and Matt fired up his boat today in the back yard.
