I occasionally attempt to build something straight…but usually fail. This stairway is an open riser stairs and will have a contemporary look to it. Here are the stringers mortised for the treads.

That's almost like a day off for you, Stan. It must be a special application that doesn't fall within code restrictions.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Never thought I'd see the day that Stan went straight ;)

John: I am having trouble building this straight stairway. I had to "rack" it before I tightened the lag bolts.
Thats what the diagonal strap is doing.

Stan,
Just for fun I will try to post some pics of mortised stairs that I have built....
Please bear in mind that these stairs are steeper than yours & have a diagonal of about 12 " ;)

Say ten hell Rez's, cross yourself with a molson's, and donate ten percent of next weeks income to Mike Smith's favorite outback, and you'll be forgiven.

Thanks Lukasan,
I will send you a dogbone if you can spot the # 8 Robertson screw head...

OOOOOhhhhh man that was a tough one even with DSL.
No dought that is the best looking ladder on the whole scow.
That #8 screw will be at the stern.
DaneI will always be a beginner as I am always learning.
After you tighten the bolts and then let the straps go, what happened? Did it spring back to where it was? As it is an open stairs it looks like would be having a mind of it's own. I remember doing something and we had to force it one way then lock it down and build around it and it stayed put. No glue in the stairs ya doing?
Dang. It must be driving you crazy. These photos are destined to become collectors items. LOL
The bitterness of poor quality remains long after low pricing is forgotten.
Blue: I over racked it an eight inch..tightened the bolts..and after releasing the tension....the treads were very square with the skirtboards. I check this two ways....with a square...and also leveling the skirtboard perfectly and seeing that the treads are then vertical. Of course if the square shows its right on..so will the levels.

About the time I manage to get something square, I go to mount it and find out the wall/floor ISN'T square. jt8
