I have a ranch style house with t-111 cedar siding. We are thinking about stripping off some 3-4 layers of paint and finishing it with a stain. My feeling is that this will be very costly and time consuming using hand applied stripping chemicals etc. Anyone recommend alternative options?

When deck posts exceed what the prescriptive code tables allow, it's time to consult a structural engineer for post sizing and possible bracing.

You may want to try asking your question over at the Breaktime forum too. They will probably have some answers for you (maybe not what you'd like to hear, but....). I never heard of cedar T-111. It may be worth stripping, but the T-111 I'm used to is just plywood with some grooves in it to look like boards and it's been primed on the front.
I can get T-1-11 in fir, cedar, or pine.Fir most common. I would not dream of trying to strip this. It is only a 1/8" top veneer of cedar that can be damaged by stripping and sanding. The T-1-11 would be cheaper to replace than to try investing so much labout in something that might jsut fail anyway

leave the t-lll in place as an extra layer of sheathing and side over it with the material of your choice.
That's what usually happens. T111 is a limited life product
