I recently toured a house that had mostly single wythe brick walls. They were not attached to a stick frame or masonry structure with ties, and there simply were small, column-like sections on the wall that were double wythes.
The house seemed structurally sound. It was the first time I saw houses built this way, though I’ve seen freestanding garden brick walls looking the same. Is there a term for it?
Now I’m interested in building one myself. Is this common enough practice in NA? It seems more approachable than building a whole house with multiple wythes of bricks.

Sure would'nt fly in SoCal
I think I found the answer - it’s pilaster. Can it be reinforced with steel to provide greater strength?
