Structurally Conspicuous Joists on Older Home Remodel
I’m in the process of adding an inlaw suite/kitchen to the second floor of my home.
The soon to be kitchen currently has the joists exposed. Where the joists meet the back supporting wall there is no rim joist, and the floor beneath it goes another 5 feet back without a supporting wall below. Instead, those last 5 feet are spanned with loosely ‘sistered’ joists, only nailed together with no hangers. Above and perpendicular to the joists is a sill plate and two more sistered 2x6s as a beam to span the 10 or so feet below. This seems a bit sketchy to me, considering this is where I plan to place the sink and install tile floor. I’ve attached a photo for clarity. (The off cuts are temporarily there to keep the cats from being too curious.) Any thoughts? Cheers

Definitely sketchy. It looks to me like a bearing wall below was removed at some point.
