I’m looking to do some real stucco finish (instead of an EIFS finish) on a house in the Chicago area, and I’m planning a 3-coat stucco on metal lath on 2 layers of 15# building paper on 1/2″ exterior grade plywood sheathing. In this climate I’m worried about cracking, so I’m planning on control joints horizontally at each floor line and vertically at 25′ max. Anyone have any experience with this and red flags I should look out for? Thanks. Dave

Get a copy of the portland cement guide on stucco. It's available from buildersbooksource:Author: Van Den Branden
Publisher: American Technical Publishers
Categories: Building Trades, Carpentry/Const Tech,
I stuccoed a small (24 by 16 two story) barn in 1998 in minnesota and its holding up fine. The main thing is to keep the sun off the newly finished stucco and don't let it dry quickly. I've seen guys up here cover sensitive areas (like posts of a covered porch) for several days with plastic.
My manual says mix your scratch coat like 3-4 sand per one part stucco mix, brown coat 4-5 sand per cement, top coat 2 sand one white portland. The manual also says "the most important part of a stucco job is floating the brown coat." I used a rubber float with not perfectly smooth finish.
You can use portland cement or a premixed stucco cement from good suppliers (hedberg aggregte up here). I think the premixed stucco mix is more pliable and less prone to cracking than the portland.
Get a good trowel.
